Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide basic scientific and application groundings in the biological and nutritional field, taking into account the requirements for access to the profession of biologist. In particular, the training course will examine the topics that will enable the nutritionist biologist to achieve the following objectives:
• gain adequate knowledge and understanding of the role of nutrition in human health;
• be able to make an adequate framing of the different contexts of dietary intervention, both in the healthy subject, in relation to the different stages of biological life, and in the subject with established pathological conditions;
• acquire appropriate knowledge in the field of functional foods and nutraceuticals, as well as supplements and trace elements.

The course is entirely taught in Italian. Some materials may be provided in English.

Nutritional Biology (LM-6 R)

Graduates will be able to:
• exercise the free profession in consulting activities in the field of bionutrition after registration in the Professional Register of Biologists;
• work in public bodies (Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, ARPA, Universities, Research Institutes) and professional studios and private laboratories;
• collaborate with the national health system and educational service companies by carrying out activities aimed at the correct application of nutrition, including educational aspects;
• work in the food processing and preservation sector, in the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as in research institutions concerned with food and nutrition;
• work in the field of scientific dissemination; access, through Postgraduate Schools, to the leading roles of competence of the Biologist in the National Health System;
• teach in secondary school, after completing the necessary training.

The two-year course includes a training programme in which the following topics are covered:
• biochemical and physiological processes of specialized cells to perform functions in the context of animal and plant organisms;
• assessment of nutritional needs and development of diet plans;
• applications of biochemical and genetic research in the medical and nutritional fields;
• epidemiological investigation and monitoring methodologies for food safety;
• role of the microbiota, functional foods, nutraceuticals, supplements and trace elements in human health.
The attendance at the classes of Anthropometric Assessment Laboratory is compulsory for two-thirds of the hours. 
The training course also includes traineeships as a means of interacting with the different realities of the world of work. 
The thesis is experimental and involves a period of activity at an internal or external research facility at the University.

• Seminars will be offered on specific course topics.
• Your training can be enriched by the Erasmus experience.
• A tutoring service is available as support to students.
• The course provides a four-year "part-time" course specifically designed for working students.
