Learning Objectives

At the end of the course the student will be able to use the main terrestrial and extraterrestrial remote sensing systems, as well as their application and usefulness in the field of geological, geomorphological and environmental studies

1 - Introduction to remote sensing systems and basic principles

What is remote sensing - Definitions and basic principles of remote sensing
Historical notes on remote sensing
Description of a remote sensing system
The principles of electromagnetic radiation
The electromagnetic spectrum used in remote sensing
Energy propagation
Spectral characteristics of the elements of the earth's surface
Notes on the main applications of remote sensing

2 - Acquisition and typology of tele-detected images

Remote sensing systems: aerial and satellite platforms
Characteristics of remote sensing satellites
Active and passive sensors
Resolution: spatial, temporal, radiometric and spectral
Characteristics of the main satellites and sensors available: Landsat, The satellite spot, IRS satellites, high resolution commercial satellites: Ikonos II; Eros-A1; Quickbird-2; OrbView-3)
Airborne laser remote sensing (LIDAR)
Satellites and extra-terrestrial missions: Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Express, Messenger, Venus express.
Main formats for storing remote data
