Learning Objectives
General understanding of the history of the Arabic literary tradition, from 750 to 1798 AD.
Program
- First part: Abbasid era.
Abbasid cultural policy. Formation of adab prose.
Ibn al-Muqaffa'. Al-Jahiz.
History, geography, travel and marvel narrative. Science prose, philosophy. Abu Faraj al-Isfahani. Al-Maqamat.
Abbasid poetry. Abu Nuwas. Love poetry. Mystical poetry. Rabi'a al-'Adawiyya.
- Second part: Crusades and "Turkish" period.
Al-Ghazali. Usama bin Munqidh. Ibn Tufayl. Ibn Khaldun.
Love poetry in al-Andalus: Ibn Zaydun, Wallada, Ibn Quzman. Muwashshaha, Zajal.
Intercultural exchanges in the Medieval Mediterranean
- Third part: Mamluk and Ottoman era.
Popular literature, theater.
