Shakespeare and storytelling

This course aims at developing a critical understanding of William Shakespeare’s linguistic and cultural legacy and of his storytelling tools, covering both theoretical and practical-operational aspects.

By the end of the course students will be able to:

-  discuss William Shakespeare’s legacy in British culture

-  understand and explain the cultural specificity of storytelling

-  identify storytelling tools in Shakespeare’s works and other texts

-  discuss a selection of Shakespeare’s works in dialogue with other pieces of storytelling

-  Identify and apply Shakespeare’s storytelling tools in different professional contexts

Knowledge and understanding: students will acquire a good knowledge and understanding of key topics concerning William Shakespeare’s legacy in British culture and of storytelling tools in his works.

Applying knowledge and understanding: students will acquire the theoretical and methodological tools to understand and comment on key issues pertaining to William Shakespeare’s legacy in British culture and of storytelling tools discuss them in dialogue with other pieces of storytelling

Making judgements: students will acquire the critical thinking skills to judge aspects of William Shakespeare’s legacy in British culture and of storytelling tools in his works and will be able to express autonomous opinions on such issues.

Communication skills: students will be able to communicate their ideas, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and non-specialist audiences, clearly and unambiguously.

Learning skills: students will possess the methodological skills, the critical thinking skills and the ability to apply their theoretical knowledge to continue their studies in the field.

Extensive self-study (detailed textual and contextual analyses of the texts) using the study material and activities provided on Moodle and, if necessary, authoritative sources available in the web.

Students who perceive gaps in their understanding should contact the lecturer for further explanation as soon as possible.
