Waves of Internationalization and De-internationalization
Abstract dell'evento
The presentation will focus on the theoretical debate about internationalization processes, relying on the Uppsala model and the born global approach. The focus will be on waves of internationalization and de-internationalization. The objective is to show the internationalization stages followed by SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and family companies. Two studies will be presented: (1) a multiple case study on five French manufacturing SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and 2) a qualitative study on 26 German family firms. Both empirical studies are based on interviews and secondary data. The findings of the two studies highlight the heterogeneity of SME and family firm internationalization processes. Their waves of internationalization and de-internationalization can be explained by internal and external factors. The novel findings enrich theoretical assumptions on firm internationalization by reconciling the Uppsala model and the born global approach.
