Suffering and the Human Condition. For a Sociology of the Negative in Globalized Society
Abstract dell'evento
Is a scientific discussion on suffering possible starting from the awareness of the common human condition? If so, why was it removed also from sociology for so long? After having investigated the reasons for this removal, I take into consideration how the various mythological and religious conceptions of different human societies have tried to explain and address the problem of suffering through the category of "evil"; then examining how and why it essentially disappeared in industrial and post-industrial societies. Then re-emerging as a discourse on the dimension of the "negative", which represents an intrinsic component of the human condition that a nascent critical and reflective "sociology of the negative" can allow to analyse on the basis of new research paths that are now unavoidable in globalized society.
