Knot theory and physics: from the vortex model to the 6-vertex model
Abstract dell'evento
In this seminar, I will discuss the interactions between knot theory, a branch of topology, and some physical topics. The very birth of knot theory is connected to the vortex theory of the atom developed by Thompson in the early 19th century, but the most interesting interactions concern statistical mechanics and quantum physics. In particular, we will discuss the relationship between 6-vertex or ice-type models and polynomial invariants related to knot representations through braids.
