Earth science from a human perspective
Abstract dell'evento
Earth processes come in various sizes, mechanisms, and speeds. When we focus on them from a human perspective, we easily concentrate on phenomena expected to greatly impact our lives, like earthquakes, majestic eruptions, landslides, or tsunamis. These phenomena can quickly spread their effects over wide areas and affect communities and their infrastructures, sometimes for long periods. If we study Earth Sciences to protect ourselves from events of this kind, we ought to face the lack of access to the Earth’s interior: when threatened by complex, often non-linear processes, we are left partially blind and burdened with uncertainties. The recent volcanic unrest at Campi Flegrei is a clear example of the challenges of hazard mitigation. Monitoring the volcano to understand its state of evolution, addressing the nature, size, and probability of future events, assessing the expected impact: these are all formidable tasks. And yet, even if we succeeded in pursuing them all, the problem wouldn’t be entirely solved. People’s behaviour may be as unpredictable as the volcano itself: receiving the correct information at the right time may not be enough to ensure the adoption of mitigation measures and safe behaviours. Embracing the human perspective may also mean engaging in difficult conversations, which entails listening and allowing the time it takes to build trust.
But even if we just want to be hard, theoretical scientists, the human perspective still enters the game, by affecting how we look and think about the world, informing our understanding of the processes that shape the Earth. Let’s begin this lecture from here.
