Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of the basic concepts of Chemistry and scientific language. The students will be able to use the key concepts of the discipline in the teaching of Physical and Natural Sciences. After completing the course, the students will be able to identify, relate to and manage the core themes of Chemistry according to their relevance and accessibility in the context of the Infant and Primary schools. Learning the basic concepts of Chemistry will allow the future teachers to prepare lessons dealing with simple problems related to matter and its transformations. Finally, since Chemistry is fundamentally an experimental science, practical experiments will be included in the Infant and Primary Schools syllabus to accompany the theoretical lessons.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

In relation to the course of Elements of Chemistry and Chemistry Didactics students must:

-know the characteristics, properties, composition and transformations of matter;

-be able to describe the macroscopic and microscopic particle of matter;

-have the ability to identify the core themes of Chemistry, plan and implement the Teaching/ Learning Units about the phenomena dealing with the natural and artificial phenomena;

-use the specific language and be able to identify appropriate didactic methodologies in context, focusing on  teaching and learning by laboratory experiments;

-utilize the knowledge and the concepts in order to be able to reason independently on issues of the discipline and design original educational courses that can encourage learning by discovering.
