Learning Objectives

A student should be able to analyze texts from a historical-theoretic point of view, without giving place to unfounded hypotheses. The lectures on meditation will better her/his mindfulness and insights.

Program

It is a course in comparative philosophy, dealing with Samuel Beckett and Chan Buddhism. The texts are: Beckett, The Unnamable; Malone dies; Chan Buddhism: Il libro della tranquillità (The Book of Tranquillity). The philosophical category of nonsense will be dealt with from an existential perspective alien to/different from formal logic. The topics of death and individual identity will be examined in depth.

Bridging Courses

Philosophy of language, Theoretic philosophy.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

A student should be capable of analzying the above-mentioned texts and the topics they open. S/he should have a preliminary knowledge of the history of contemporary philosophy.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

A few lectures will be dedicated to meditation (mindfulness). Students will be asked to give  feedbacks about their experiences. Students will be asked to give feedbacks about their experiences.

Attendance

Students have to attend almost the totality of the lectures; otherwise, they are considered "non frequentanti"(not-attending). The mentioned texts cannot be replaced.

S. Beckett, The Unnamable; Malone Dies (in whatever edition and language). Il libro della tranquillità, edited by L. V. Arena, ebook (Amazon sites). Secondary literature: H. Nakamura, Ways of Thinking of Eastern Peoples, Honolulu, University Press 1966 and sqq. (the section on China only). L. V. Arena, Introduzione alla storia del buddhismo Chan, ebook (Amazon sites), (or A. Masao, Zen and Western Thought, vol. I, Honolulu, University Press).

Assessment

Oral examination.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Teaching

Students have to consult the teacher in order to learn the pronunciation of Sanskrit,Chinese, and Japanese words.

Attendance

They should be in contact with the teacher and attend some lectures.

Course books

They are the same as the ones for the attending students; in addition, the Japanese section of the above-mentioned book by Nakamura.

Assessment

Oral examination. Disabled students will be examined through multiple-answers tests.
