Learning Objectives
The course aims to give students, through the knowledge of tools such as remote sensing by aerial photo and geomorphological mapping, the ability to use the geomorphological indicators in environmental studies, in spatial planning, risk assessment and enhancement of resources.
Program
Application fields of geomorphology for environmental management and base knowledge necessary for the protection and planning. The geomorphological hazard: conceptual and methodological aspects. Introduction to air photo interpretation. Recognition of the landforms on the air photos for understanding the geomorphological processes. Detailed description of the most important geomorphological indicators of slope instability and of fluvial and coastal environments. Soil erosion and implications for geomorphology. Action of rain and channeled waters; methods for the evaluation of soil erosion. River sediment transport as an index of soil erosion; direct measurement of sediment transport of rivers; use of quantitative geomorphology for indirect assessment of turbid transport. Fluvial geomorphology: geomorphological approach to the study of rivers and their dynamics. Concept of dynamic equilibrium, Bankfull, Channel-Forming or Effective discharge. Geomorphological evolution of rivers, historical analysis, Identification of potentially high erosion risk. Relations between fluvial dynamics and modification of river beds; management problems of river beds. Quantitative assessment of geological sites: examples in the Marche region. cultural geomorphology, geomorphological indicators for the study of archaeological sites, descriptions of various case studies including the Ostra roman site and Montecopiolo medieval site. The landscapes in the art, multidisciplinary approach to study the historical evolution of the territory. Introduction to the laboratory. Identification of areas affected by large mass movements and DGPV in the most representative areas of central Italy. Geomorphological mapping of the alluvial valley floor and coastal areas. Mention of aeolian, volcanic and karst landforms.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
The course aims to give students, through the knowledge of tools such as remote sensing by aerial photo and geomorphological mapping, the ability to use the geomorphological indicators in environmental studies, in spatial planning, risk assessment and enhancement of resources. The student must also show to learn about the tools available to resolve with efficiency and precision, environmental problems. Ultimately it must be able to handle geological problems related to the environment by identifying appropriate geomorphological techniques.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
The course is based on lectures and practical exercitations in photo laboratory.
- Attendance
An individual project to geomorphological mapping with the final report and discussion will be required.
- Course books
Panizza M. - Geomorfologia applicata. NIS.
It will be shown and/or distributed, also online, specific teaching materials.
- Assessment
Oral examination
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
