Bridging Courses

Bridging courses do not foreseen

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1 – Knowledge and ability of comprehension.

The student will learn the chemical foundations and he will be able to analyze the matter, highlighting the relation among formula, geometries and molecular properties. He will foresee and understand the acid-base and redox behavior of the main compounds. He will know the electronic structure of an atom and of a molecule, the periodic table and its main periodic properties, the nomenclature of the chemical compounds, the chemical bonds, the principles of the chemical equilibria and of the chemical reactions as the acid-base and redox reactions, the main properties of gases, liquids and solids, the intermolecular forces, the main foundations of the thermodynamic, of the chemical kinetic and of the electrochemistry. He will be able to solve the stoichiometric calculus about chemical reactions and solutions. The graduate will show familiarity with the concepts of the mole, the concentration of the solutions, the pH and the solubility. In addition, he will know the numerical techniques to describe the equilibria, the reactions and to prepare a solution. These knowledges will be checked by written and oral tests.

D2 – Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension.

The student will have the skill to analyze the chemical formula and to properly use the chemical terminology. He will know how to use the concentration in the solution systems and the stoichiometry related to the chemical reactions; he will be able to solve problems related to the chemical equilibria and to the acid-base and redox reactions. In particular, he will be able to determine the yield and the conversion of a reaction, the pH of an aqueous solution, the solubility of an electrolyte in water, to prepare a solution with a known titre as well as a buffer solution. He will be able to foresee and understand the acid-base and redox behavior of a simple compound. These knowledges will be evaluated by written and oral tests.

D3 – Autonomy of judgement.

The student will learn to evaluate in a critical way the role of the chemical substances in a system as, for examples, a solution, a buffer solution, a physiological solution. He will foresee the chemical behavior of the substance, as the acid-base or redox behavior to conseguently be able, through the competences obtained in the subsequent courses, to understand more complexed systems, paying particular attention to the biological ones. These skills will be checked by the written test as well as by aimed application oral answers.

D4 – Application skill.

The student will be able to describe the acquired knowledge during the course, giving a description of the phenomena and of the chemical-physic theories learnt; this will occur expressing himself clearly and correctly and using appropriate terms and right examples.

D5 – Learning skill.

The student will be able to build up his scientific growth in a critical and independent way; he will be able to properly use the studying materials provided by the teacher as well as the widening materials that himself can get. As far as possible, these skills will be stimulated by the teacher, suggesting study in depth and giving exercises to solve at home during the course; these latter will be explained and discussed during some not obligatory additional hours.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

The didactic material, made available by the teacher, is accessible, together with other supporting activities on the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

The course foresees some hours of facultative stoichiometric exercitations in addition to the 56 foreseen.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

The course consists in lecturers and stoichiometry together with practical experiences to favor the comprehension.

Students can attend the lectures asking explanations to the teacher

Attendance

The frequency is not obligatory. Basic knowledges of mathematic and physic are requested.

Course books

Fusi, Bacchi, Giorgi, Marchetti, Messori, Paoli, Punzo, Sortino, Tolazzi. Chimica generale e inorganica. Idelson Gnocchi editore

Assessment

The assessment of the learning provides a written and an oral examination

The aim of the written examination is to verify the student skills with respect to the balance of a chemical reaction, to the molecular structure and to the stoichiometric calculus of the taught subjects as the concentration of a solution and its related properties, the quantification of reagents and products in a chemical equilibrium, paying particular attention to the acid-base reactions and to the pH.

The aim of the oral examination is to verify the student preparation with respect to the writing of a chemical formula, to the prevision of the chemico-physical properties of the main compounds (oxides, hydrides, acids, bases, salts) as well as of the theoretical concepts, explained during the course. The student must be able to furnish appropriate examples concerning each argument to demonstrate the full comprehension of it.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Teaching

The non-attending students could ask for the didactic material furnished by the teacher during the lesson; in addition, the teacher is at their disposal for personal meeting to clarify the arguments.

It is custom of the teacher to send the done program each week to the students with the aim help them in studying organization.
