Learning Objectives
The primary objectives of this teaching course are to help students make better links between sports and pharmacology knowledge, and make applications based on this knowledge in the field of athletic training and sport competitions; improve their consciousness about the risks of doping as well as their knowledge on the specific doping agents; make better and scientifically grounded links between sports and nutrition supplements.
Program
First stage. General pharmacology.
Second stage. Drugs acting on autonomic nervous system.
Third stage. Drugs prescription in sport medicine; drugs used in orthopedic medicine. Sport nutrition supplements: efficacy and safety
Fourth stage. Antihypertensive drugs. Commonly prescribed drugs in Sport medicine. NSAIDs, glucocorticoids. Analgesics. .
Fifth stage. Drugs illegally used in sport competition: effects on athletic performance , mechanism of action, side and toxic effects. Doping agents according to WADA classification.

Knowledge and understanding - Basic knowledge of fundamental pharmacology and of the studied classes of drugs.
Applying knowledge and understanding - Capacity of understanding the impact of pharmacological therapy.
Making judgements - Capacity of autonomously forming personal and adequate opinions on pharmacological issues
Communication skills - Capacity of writing and explaining pharmacological concepts and issues using the basic terminology of the field.
Learning skills - The students will autonomously update their knowledge in the field; they will also be capable of critically understanding pharmacological issues inherent to their profession..

- Assessment
Written questionnaire consisiting in 15 close-ended, multiple choice questions (2/30 or 0/30 for each correct or wrong answers/unanswered questions, respectively) and 2 open questions (from-2 to +2/30 for each answer). The final mark corresponds to the algebric sum of the above scores (the minimunm mark is 18/30). The students can either accept this mark, or ask for an additional viva voce examination. In this case the final mark corresponds to the integration of written and viva voce results.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
