Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  •  understand a wide range of demanding, longer clauses, and recognize implicit meaning.
  • express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  •  use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  •  produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

1st Semester:

- Intro. to the course - description of exam- general message to all students

-Ice breaker activity

- Intro to the 'dispensa'

Topics (accompanied by exercises)

- Comma splice/ run on sentences

- Videos and readings - comprehension and discussion (current events) throughout the course.

- Presentation of  websites for study and practice

- The definite and indefinite articles (omission of the def. article)

- Verbals - gerunds/gerund phrases _ to infinitive/to infinitive phrases

- Conditionals and mixed conditionals

- Verb tense review

- Asking questions

- Translation Italian >English-common mistakes

- False friends

- Repairing run on sentences (comma splice)

- Vocabulary building exercises (throughout course)

   word formation charts

   phrasal verbs

   reporting verbs 

    avoiding 'very'

- Reported Speech

- The Passive Voice

- Prepositions and common collocations

- Adverbial phrases

- Position of adverbs 

- Connectives

- Inversion

- Position of prepositional phrases

- Exam practice- 2° year

Topics (accompanied by exercises)

- Punctuation (comma, colon, semi-colon)

- Restictive vs. non restrictive clauses (punctuation)

- Subject -verb agreement (common problems)

- Story telling strategies (for orals)

- Common Collocations 

- Using more formal language 

- Verbals continued

- Prepositional phrases (order of)

Throughout the program:

- Videos and readings followed by  class discussions and / or comprehension and / or vocabulary building exercises

(current event topics / biographies/ education / the arts / translation /language studies/ interviews/etc.

- Exam practice  B2 level

The teaching material prepared by the language assistant in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the language assistant specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
