Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide skills and mastery of theoretical and practical quali- and quantitative chemical analysis of organic substances of pharmaceutical interest, recorded and not, in the European Pharmacopoeia (E.P.)
Program
- Solubility, dissolution process, types of solvents, structure-solubility relationships, solubility assay, pKa, solubility in acqueous environment at varying pH
- Determination of some physical-chemical constants: melting point, boiling point, melting point in the mixture
- Qualitative elemental analysis (C, H, N, S, P, X)
- Analysis of recognition of metal-organic compounds
- General assays and recognition of functional groups
- Systematic identification of an unknown organic substance
- Recognition essay and purity of the main pharmaceutical structures according to the monographs of F.U. and E.P.
Bridging Courses
Successfully passed the general and inorganic chemistry exam and attended the pharmaceutical I laboratory
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING- Knowledge of traditional analytical techniques in organic and inorganic chemistry; understanding of more recent instrumental techniques of organic qualitative analysis applied to organic and inorganic substances. These skills will be assessed through the unknown analyses.
D2-APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING- Applying traditional and instrumental analytical techniques to the determination of unknown compound belonging to the European Pharmacopoeia (E.P.). These skills will be assessed through the unknown analyses.
D3-AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT- Acquisition of skills to undertake analysis of unknown substances as autonomously and independently as possible. These skills will be assessed both during the course and the unknown analyses.
D4-COMMUNICATION- Development of communication skills suited to the presentation of the collected data during the analysis of unknown substances. Ability to report the results in an analytical and synthetic way. Ability to describe the principles and concepts learned during the course through appropriate language and with appropriate examples. These skills will be assessed both during the course and the unknown analyses.
D5-LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS- The student at the end of the course, will possess enough understanding and knowledge to perform qualitative analysis of unknown organic and inorganic compounds belonging to the European Pharmacopoeia (E.P.). Moreover, the student will be able to continuously updating his background through the study of the literature, database, etc.. These skills, as far as possible, will be stimulated by the teacher both during the course and the unknown analyses.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
The course includes:
- frontal lessons - participated individual/group laboratory experiences
- Innovative teaching methods
The laboratory teaching method will be enriched with individual and group exercises and insights, following the practice of "learning by doing".
- Attendance
The frequency of laboratory experiences is mandatory. To gain access to the laboratory is necessary to have passed the exam of General and Inorganic Chemistry.
- Course books
- lesson slides & Italian Pharmacopoeia X Ed.
- reference textbook: - A. Carta, M. G. Mamolo, F. Novelli, S. Piras, Analisi Farmaceutica Qualitativa (Analisi qualitativa organica ed inorganica non strumentale), EdiSES Ed.
- Assessment
Evaluation on the reports of the unknown analyzes.
The expected learning outcomes will be evaluated through 3 analyzes which involve the determination of the unknown substances assigned. The time available for each test is 4 hours. The evaluation of the aforementioned tests will have a formative nature in order to test the mastery of knowledge and skills relating to the application of qualitative analysis on substances of organic origin of pharmaceutical interest as well as the presentation of the data collected during the same.
Upon approval of the practical part of the lab, the assessment of learning provides for a written and an oral exam (Prof Retini) to verify the student's acquisition of the theoretical concepts carried out during the theoretical lessons. Knowledge of solubility and identification/determination of functional groups in 4 compounds of pharmaceutical interest, with particular attention also for instrumental and separation techniques described in the theoretical lessons will be required for the students. It will also be verified the student's ability to link the topics covered during lessons as well as solve practical and application issues. The exam is expressed in thirties.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
