Learning Objectives
Methodological elements for the study of Italian texts and literary history. History profile of literary genres. Approach to the thematic reading of the literary text, to periodization and to literary geography. Development of the fundamental tools for commenting on the text. Specific notions related to narrative writing: short story, poem, novel.
Program
The course is divided into two sections, managed by the teacher on the basis of diversified methodological approaches.
Institutional part. Italian literature and the forms of narrative writing. Distinctive elements of literary genres. The Medieval Novel in Romance Literature and Italian Literature. Affirmation of the novella as an autonomous genre in the late Middle Ages. The narrative poem: the chivalrous form and the epic-heroic pome. Birth and affirmation of the prose novel.
Text analysis. Guided reading and historical and linguistic commentary on literary texts. The Decameron by G. Boccaccio. Jerusalem Delivered by T. Tasso. The Betrothed and the nineteenth-century novel.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Course books
A handout of teaching materials will be made available to attending students after the start of the course. The handout includes texts related to the topics of the lectures, and is an exam subject for attending students. Other materials, critical texts and anthological selections will be provided to students via a blended learning platform. During the exam, in addition to the topics presented by the teacher, attending students must prepare the following texts (some of which are included in the aforementioned dispensation):
