Learning Objectives
The course has the purpose to provide students on the supramolecular chemistry foundations and they will be introduced to the several supramolecular chemistry application fields.
The course will be focused on the principles of the supramolecular chemistry, the chemistry domain beyond molecules; this will be mainly focused on the pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnological fields. The main rudiments for the formation of the supramolecular systems will be furnished, including the main driving forces, the molecular recognition and the self-assembling process. This will be obtained starting to examine simple systems constituted by few molecular units to more complexed nano-systems looking also to their applications. Students will be able to understand the main supramolecular driving forces and how to exploit them for applications in their field of study.
Program
01 – The supramolecular chemistry: definition, historical background, fields of study “molecular chemistry” and “supramolecular chemistry”
02 - The principles on which the supramolecular chemistry is based: weak bonding interactions (electrostatic interations, stacking, H-bonding, hydrophobic effect), preorganization and thermodynamic aspects
03 – Molecular recognition, self-assembling and molecular architecture: relation among property, structure and molecular design.
04 – Supramolecular nano-systems and their uses
05 – Main applications: catalysis , recognition, sensing, molecular machine
Bridging Courses
Bridging courses do not foreseen
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
D1 – Knowledge and ability of comprehension.
The student will have the skill to describe the basic theory of the supramolecular chemistry; He will have to know the elements to understand the formation processes organized by weak interactions and the criteria to design supramolecular systems. He will have to know the main system and their applications in the chemical-pharmaceutical fields as well as the principles of operation. These knowledges will be checked by oral questions.
D2 – Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension.
Student will have to be able to utilize the correct chemistry language, to recognize a supramolecular system, the driving forces determining the formation as well as the working principles to determine the final application. The achievement of these abilities will be tested through the oral examination.
D3 – Autonomy of judgement.
Student will have to be able to estimate the role played by the substances as well as the interactions leading the formation of the supramolecular system such as the complementary of the binding sites and the molecular preorganization. The achievement of these abilities will be tested through oral questions aimed at estimate them.
D4 – Application skill.
Student will have to be able to clearly describe the physical-chemical phenomena learned in the course with appropriate language and examples.
D5 – Learning skill.
Student will have to be able to grow autonomously and critically their scientific knowledges by using the teaching material provided by the teacher and any other book or scientific article provided by themselves. These abilities will be stimulated by the teacher proposing in depth analysis.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
The course consists in lecturers to favor the comprehension.
Students can attend the lectures asking explanations to the teacher
- Attendance
None
- Course books
Absence of reference text and the material will be provided by the professor
- Assessment
The assessment of the learning provides an oral examination
The aim of the oral examination is to verify the student preparation with respect to the supramolecular chemistry concepts the main parameters applaied to obtain supramolecular natural and artificial systems and thier applications in the chemical-pharmaceutical field. The student must be able to furnish appropriate examples concerning each argument to demonstrate the full comprehension of it.
The oral examination will be judge with a thirtieth vote
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
- Teaching
Non-attending students could ask for the didactic material furnished by the teacher during the lesson; in addition, the teacher is at their disposal for personal meeting to clarify the arguments.
It is custom of the teacher to send the done program each week to the students with the aim help them in studying organization.
