Learning Objectives

Psychological trauma and its consequences are a complex phenomenon, which requires a multidisciplinary understanding and care to prevent longer term outcomes. For this reason, different health and social care professionals are sought to acquire a common vision and strategy to detect the effects of potential and/or chronic traumatization, the signals of post-traumatic reactions, and to implement effective strategies to offer continuity of care and to prevent more serious outcomes.

The programme aims to train social workers, educators, teachers, nurses, medical doctors, and all other health and social care professionals so that they can gain a solid understanding of trauma-informed principles. More specifically, participants will learn about the nature of diverse traumatic events (maltreatment, abuse, migration, natural disasters, medical procedures) with focus on Covid-19 pandemy. Furthermore, they will be given an overview of the neurobiology of trauma, trauma-related syndromes, and resilience across the lifespan. Furthermore, they will be exposed to a multicultural view of trauma to better inform treatment and trauma reactions.

In the second part of the programme, participants will practice trauma informed principles as applied to different contexts, such as schools, hospitals, social services. The course is aimed at graduates of I and II level in the fields of psychological, medical, legal, economic, training, sociological, anthropological disciplines and graduates belonging to health professions (Law January 8, 2002 No. 1) provided that they hold the diploma of secondary school five years . In addition, access will be granted to linguistic and cultural mediators, social workers, tutors of unaccompanied minors, community workers, anthropolosists, health professionals or other curricula consistent with the objectives of the course and assessed by the Course Secretary.

Graduates abroad are also admitted, subject to the equivalence of the title for the sole purpose of enrollment in the course.

The course meets the requirements established by the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies - ESTSS to obtain  the Certification in Trauma Care - foundations (health and social-educational professions) provided in Italy by the Italian Society for the Study of Traumatic Stress - SISST.

This learning opportunity is based on theoretical and practical reflections that address the complex theme of trauma both as individual repercussions and in terms of community assistance (social workers, community workers, linguistic and cultural mediators, anthropologists), scholastic (teachers , school administrators, support teachers) and legal (community leaders, lawyers, judges, legal guardians). These themes can add competences to the professional figures to whom the course is addressed and they can spend all them in public or private training, care and / or assistance institutions as well as in the free-professional activities.
