Learning Objectives

The training is centered on theoretical and practical tools that can guide reasoning and clinical reflection about the impact of psychological trauma (individual and society) in a multidisciplinary trauma-care. It integrates evidence-based principles of diagnosis and clinical intervention with social disciplines involved in understanding the traumatic complexity and its consequences. A classification of the nature of the traumatic events will be proposed starting from the trajectories of individual and contextual vulnerabilities with particular attention to the neurophysiological and psychopathological consequences. Ther will be a continuous focusing on Covid-19 pandemic consequences and dynamics and on War traumas. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge on how to evaluate trauma-related syndromes - according to the approach of the DSM 5, PDM II, ICD-11 -, their comorbidities and indirect effects (ie language disorders, learning, hyperactivity, impulse dysregulation) according to a lifespan perspective.

Regarding the clinical intervention, the course aims to introduce evidence-based therapies focused on trauma to treat trauma-related syndromes. In particular, two models will be presented: the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Focused Trauma (TF-CBT) and the Protocol of Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET). The models are built by modules and manualized  to make the implementation in the services easier and suitable for follow-up monitoring with respect to the possible remission of post-traumatic symptoms. In the transition from assessment to therapy, participants will also familiarize themselves with psychoeducation techniques, a fundamental element for normalization, collaboration in the treatment and empowerment of the client. The integration of the clinical and transcultural perspectives, is useful for responding to the needs and interpretation of trauma in migrant, war and asylum seekers contexts.

In the second part of the course, the reflection will move on the impact of the trauma on society and on the need, therefore, to build models of trauma-informed services and to implement multidisciplinary and integrated political-health strategies. In this framework, participants will also acquire skills on the role of trauma in organizations and their impact on mental health professionals.
