Themes
The teaching course aims to offer basic cognitive elements on the therapeutic value of self-medication drugs (OTC), on their use in the pathologies for which they are indicated as well as on the safety implications in order to promote a critical and responsible knowledge of this practice. Self-medication is increasingly spreading in western countries thanks to the availability of OTC medicines (OTCs) that do not require a prescription. Furthermore, in the pandemic period the use of self-medication drugs has increased exponentially. The fact that OTCs do not require a prescription and that their use is limited to benign pathological conditions, should not give rise to the idea that these drugs can be taken without care and responsibility. The lack of this awareness may not only vanish the positive potential of self-medication, but can also turn it into a risky practice. The critical knowledge of the advantages and of the limits of self-medication therefore represents one of the most important aspects of the health education of the young generations.
