"Physics of the Earth and planets"
Abstract dell'evento
The Earth and the planets are complex physical systems in a state of permanent evolution, composed by interacting subsystems (or “spheres”) whose properties are not fully accessible to our investigation. “Everything flows” in the Earth system. The spatial and temporal scales of the flows are extremely variable, from a few seconds to millions of years. I shall illustrate some case studies involving the Earth and planets, with emphasis on geophysical phenomena that are manifest through the interaction of the solid parts with the fluid parts, both on regional and global scales, like continental drift, mantle convection, plate tectonics, and glacial isostasy.
