“Conditionals: what do we disagree about?” (partly based on a joint work with Giuliano Rosella and Jan Sprenger)
Abstract dell'evento
This talk examines disagreement concerning conditionals in two main ways. First, it briefly addresses disagreement over principles governing conditionals, providing an overview of influential contemporary theories. The focus is on controversial principles that remain a source of debate among scholars. Second, the talk delves more deeply into disagreement about conditionals in natural language and everyday life. Examples of disagreement about conditional are presented and compared to non-conditional cases to highlight key differences. Full (about truth values) and credal (about confidence degrees) disagreement, as well as strong (rejection) and weak (suspended judgment) forms of disagreement, are explored. The focus is on how different semantic models, such as possible-world semantics and Adams’ probabilistic approach, handle indicative conditionals. The talk concludes by outlining remaining problems and future work.
