Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge of the cosmetic world. Provide practical skills to evaluate the characteristics of a cosmetic product and learn to distinguish the various ingredients in order to drive potential customers to the choice of cosmetic products.
Knowledge of the legal obligations in the role of Responible Person and distributors.
Knowledge the principles of formulation and production of a cosmetic

Program

Introduction. Legislation of cosmetics. Definition of cosmetic product.
• Raw materials for cosmetics:
◦ basic substances and functional,
◦ lipids, natural oils and fats, mineral greases and silicone derivatives
◦ surfactants and cleaning.
◦ emulsifiers and their categorization
◦ humectants, antioxidants, dyes, rheology agents, auxiliary substances.
◦ moisturizing products, and functional ingredients
◦ Fragrances and perfuming
◦ Preservation systems and their evaluation
• GMP
• Responsible person, obligations related
• INCI nomenclature
• Machinery for the production of cosmetics
• Machinery for the packaging of cosmetics
• Basic information about formulation of detergent systems
• Basic information about formulation of emulsifying systems

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

It is expected that the student, at the end of the course, have acquired the tools to understand from reading a label of a cosmetic product the kind of formulation (shampoo, shower gel, lotion, ecc...) , what are the active ingredients and what the key ingredients.
The student must demonstrate that they have internalized some basic concepts of general chemistry of cosmetics ingredients distinguishing its various classes.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Front lessons
At the end of the year we will made a gropu work for the compilation of a paper on the development of a set of cosmetics.
The thesis aims to summarize in a specific case development and the issues that face the company in developing new products
The essay is limited to students attending at least 75% attendance during the year.

Assessment

Oral Examination

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
