Learning Objectives

The course aims to approach the cultural relationships between Spain and Italy, from the
end of XIX century until the half of XX century, highlighting the relationships between
the intellectuals of both countries. The subject will be developed through the analysis of
the cultural production of some important personalities and through an in-depth study
of some particular translations. The course will also deal with the Italian-Spanish
editorial outlook, considering the presence of several Italian works in Spanish
publishing, and vice versa.

Program

1.- Premise: brief story of a long-lasting contact.
2.- Italian-Spanish -Italian translating interferences and difficulties.
3.- Poetical Extract -"Cala poética 1": Leopardi in Spanish.
4.- Poetical Extract -"Cala poética 2": Guillén-Montale.
5.- Narrative chapter 1: Carmen Martín Gaite. Gaite and Ginzburg.
6.- Narrative chapter 2: Camilliere in Spain, Giménez-Bartlett in Italy.
7.- Publishing: round trip.

Assessment

Students are asked to write an essay to deliver, and report it during the last week of
classes. Every theme dealt with during the course, could be the subject for the essay. In
addition to this, the teacher suggests the following subjects.
1) Valle-Inclán and D'Annunzio
2) Unamano and Italy, with a special attention to the Unamuno-Pirandello relationship.
3) Gadda and the Spanish culture.
4) Italian writers inside Spanish publishing (2000-2015). (Who are they?, What has been
translated?, How they have translated? Does it exist publishing planning?)
5) Spanish writers inside Italian publishing (2000-2015) (Who are they?, What has been
translated?, How they have been translated? Does it exist a publishing planning?)
Students have to contact the teacher to search the specific bibliography, connected to
the above mentioned subjects or to other suggested subjects.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Attendance

Students unable to attend the classes, have to deliver the above mentioned essay.
Students are advised to contact the teacher as soon as possible.
