Learning Objectives
The course objectives are to build those skills necessary to deal with scientific texts in the field of geology (abstracts, articles, texts, etc.), to learn basic sector-specific terminology used in the field of geology (including definitions), to learn how to correctly pronounce sector-specific language and gain fluency in scientific English.
The final objective is to is to obtain (or at least approach) a B2 level of English according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) standards. and to provide the foundations for further studies of English while contemporarily focusing on sector-specific language.
A solid command of English is essential for academic and career advancement in the field of geology as it is in all scientific fields.
Program
During the course, various topics in the field of the geological sciences
will be addressed through the CLIL (Content and Integrated Learning) approach.
Grammar and Use of English will be addressed concomitantly with reading and listening exercises, and those based on
video materials. Vocabulary building exercises will be based on classroom materials.
The following topics of study will be addressed approximately in the following order:
the scientific abstract
the phenomenon of fracking
sector specific vocabulary in the field of geology and minerology
common definitions in the field of geology
Other topics will be alternated throughout the course:
texts and news articles regarding geology
videos (often with English subtitles)
elements of grammar and Use of English
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
The student must demonstrate a knowledge of the structure of the scientific abstract in the field of geology.
The student must be able to summarize texts and content covered in class.
The student must be able to express him/herself using appropriate
sector-specific terminology.
The student must demonostrate a level of English that equals or closely approaches a B2 level according to the CEFR

All students, both attending and non-attending, must contact the teacher at the beginning of the academic year via email (francesca.carducci@uniurb.it)
Program course materials will be provided by the teacher via email once contacted.The following grammar and Use of English text (including exercises) is recommended:
Raymond Murphy(2012) English Grammar in Use 4th Edition
(w/key and CD pack) Cambridge University Press
- Assessment
Oral language assessment based on lesson content.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Notes
Attending classes is strongly encouraged.
When writing to the professor, students must use the email address provided by the University of Urbino and use GEOLOGY as the subject of their email.
