Learning Objectives

The course of Bioinorganic has the aim to provide students the main bases of bioinorganic chemistry. It takes into account the role of metal ions within the biologic systems. In the first part of the course the principles of the coordination chemistry will be discussed. Subsequently, the role of transition metal ions into some important biological and nutritional processes will be studied in detail.

Program

Overview of Bioinorganic chemistry. Principles of coordination chemistry related to Bioinorganic chemistry. Properties of biological Molecules. Physical methods in Bioinorganic Chemistry. Metal ions in biology. Control and utilization of metal-ion concentration in cells. Metal ion folding and cross-linking of biomolecules. Binding of metal ions and complexes to biomolecule-active centers. Electron-transfer proteins. Substrate binding and activation by nonredox mechanisms. Atom- and group-transfer chemistry. Metals in medicine (Magnetic Resonance Imaging, radiodiagnostic agents, etc.).

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
