Learning Objectives
In its general part, the course will offer a historical perspective of the psychological disciplines, from their roots to today, critically argued. They will therefore treated the major issues of historiographical, epistemological, theoretical and methodological order, as well as some of those related to applications; They will also be presented the paths of the great theoretical and research schools, with references to the most relevant issues for the contemporary psychology.
The first monographic part aims to deepen, on the background of the history of international psychology and in relation to this, the specific story of psychology in Italy, in its salient features and the factors that contributed to determining the present situation in our country. The second monographic part concerns the figure and work of Alfred Binet, French scholar considered, after Galton and Cattell, the true initiator of the psychological testing movement.

History and historiography of psychology - Key epistemological and methodological questions of psychology - The origins of psychology - Structuralism and functionalism - Reflexology and cultural-historical psychology - Psychoanalysis - Gestalt psychology – Behaviorism and neo-behaviorism - Geneva School - Cognitivism - Other theoretical perspectives - Relations between the theoretical and intervention level - Psychology as a profession: contexts and forms of intervention.
Monographic section
I - Historical Outlines of Italian psychology (until 1945): the socio-cultural context and philosophical influences; the beginnings; periodization; the presence in the international field; the themes and the most significant scholars; scientific journals, university teaching and associations; the psychological testing in Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the first diffusion of psychoanalysis in Italy; the Italian Society of Psychology and the first national conventions; the events of 1905 (the Fifth International Congress, the announcement of the first chairs, the foundation of “Rivista di Psicologia”). Notes on developments since World War II to today.
II - Alfred Binet: cephalometry, suggestibility, measurement of intelligence, relationships with Italians scholars, the “Année Psychologique”.

In relation to History of Psychology, students must show the possession of:
- the mastery of basic skills;
- understanding of the basic concepts of the discipline;
- the ability to use knowledge and concepts for reasoning according to the logic of the discipline.

The exam includes a written ascertainment proof, which will be followed by an oral proof (optional).
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
