Learning Objectives

The didactic route of the entire course is built u with a number of biological matters with the aim to obtain a clear background on techniques and applied methodologies for the morphological analysis of different human body systems. In this direction the didactic route provide at first a setting on methodologies for the characterization of the sample in Citohistology and Cytochemistry/Histchemistry units, then this unit, Cytometry, faces subjects related to instrumentations for the dynamic automated cell analysis at high resolution and its related methodologies for the phenotypic study of cells at the molecular level, the cell differentiation process and some cellular metabolic processes.

Program

Optics: light diffusion – scattering, light absorbance and fluorescence, fluorochromes.

Flow cytometer structure and sorter function

Flow acquisition and analysis software, histogram and dot-plot analysis

Application in cell kinetics: DNA measure, cell kinetics, proliferation probes, protocol for DNA/BrdU analysis

Application in Immunology: qualitative and quantitative phenotype, cell immunology and subset analysis (Cluster)

Application in Cell Function: membrane potential, apoptosis, cell-to-cell interaction (Cross talk), mitochondria and chromosome analysis.

Flow Instrumentation: FACSaria, FACSCanto, Coulter Navios, MoFlow.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student must show mastery of basic knowledge related to geometrical optics and optical physics elements necessary for a proper understanding of the operation of the two types that characterize the instrumental teaching.

The student must show an understanding of the concepts and theories provided by the course; It will provide examples of morphometric and cytometric analysis identifying strengths and weaknesses of the various instruments depending on the field of biological investigation.

The student must show the requisite skills and concepts and to use the knowledge gained by demonstrating to reason according to the specific logic of the discipline. It will be able in particular to identify the most appropriate methodologies appropriate to the context in question; simulate a protocol of investigation; envisage some possibility of intervention by identifying the tool best suited to the analysis cytology.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

The educational material is present on Google Drive, accessible and downloadable from students through credentials

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

The teaching consists of lectures and laboratory exercises teaching

Attendance

We recommend the attendance of lectures to get a good learning of the subject

Course books

Texts (handouts) are accessible on Google Drive with the PDF lessons

Assessment

It will carry out surveys of learning evaluation during the first cycle (microscopy) and second cycle (cytometry) to assess the level of learning on the entire course program.

The methods of assessment are to only oral exam

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
