Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide a general history  of Greek vases, from  the beginnings in the Proto-Geometric period to the late Hellenistic age (11th – 1st centuries BC). 

Program

Greek pottery is a primary historical-artistic source for the knowledge of the ancient world. Through a diachronic selection of significant productions introduced through outlines of relevant historical studies on Greek vases, will be discussed technical and material components of the manufacture (fabrics, slips, decorations etc.), functions of shapes, meanings of the iconographical subjects, primary and secondary end-usages, the social and artistic contexts that produced and used them.

Bridging Courses

The student will acquire (a) personal knowledge of the methodological background of the discipline, the ability to recognize and  contextualize materials and contexts correctly, an  appropriate knowledge of the scientific language of the discipline.

Teaching Material

During the course, specific readings will be suggested  in relation to the following publications, that are available in the archaeological sector of our library (Albani Palace, Via del Balestriere 2).

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Through oral examination, the student must demonstrate acquisition of the methodological background of the discipline, the ability to recognize and contextualize materials and contexts correctly, as well as appropriate knowledge of the scientific language concerning the discipline.
