Learning Objectives
Development of the autonomous critical skills of the student, basic knowledge of the history of Chinese thought and of its implication in the acquaintance with Chinese people, ability to challenge both positive and negative stereotypes.
Program
Basic knowledge of the history of Chinese thought - esp. Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism and Neoconfucianisms -, and of its actual developments. Understanding of the history of the cultural contacts between China and Europe since the Romans and particularly in the modern age, with a special focus on the elaboration of the Oriental disciplines (Sinology and Chinese philosophy) within European culture. Focus on the consequences of the prejudicial definitions of this "Oriental thought" based on the assumption of "alterity" or "otherness" (East) as the opposite of the "self" (West). A general outline of the concept of religion as applied to Chinese context, a few cultural element of Chinese "religious" and "folk" culture.

Willingness to criticise stereotypes and preconceptions, openness to challenge cultural assumptions,
personal interest in Chinese thought.
- Course books
The core manual is number 1 by Anne Cheng, available in several languages except English. The student who is unable to read a full book in Italian language could ask the professor for a different reading list, as the book number 2 by Graham with integrations.
