Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is to train students to the knowledge of criminology as a scientific analysis of the reality of crime and strategies to prevent and limit it
Program
The course consists of a basic part - the knowledge of which is required for everybody- and a special part , at the option of the student. The students who attend the lessons can agree with the professor an individualized program for the special part.
FUNDAMENTAL PART - definition , characteristics , subject and scope of criminological research , relationships with the criminal policy and penal law -. Evolution of criminological theories. . – Basic methods of criminological research - " Registered crimes” and the “dark number” .- The " definition " and the etiology of crime : sociological theories of criminal behavior .- Criminal careers. - The problem of the foundation of the punishment : retribution , general prevention , special prevention. - The types of corrections: prevention , treatment and crime control.
SPECIAL SECTION—A, Ecology of the crime . B, The personality of the offender ; victimology . C, Public opinion and crime. D, Organized crime . E, Economic crime
Bridging Courses
There is no mandatory prerequisites , however the prior attendance of the course of criminology can facilitate the approach of the students to the study of criminal law.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
At the end of the course students will have acquired the following skills :
- Awareness of the features and functions of criminology , as empirical science directed to the containment and prevention of crime ;
- Knowledge of the main contributions of criminological research aimed at identifying the causes of social and individual distress expressed through criminal behavior ;
- Knowledge of the methods of investigation of criminological research and ability to read properly the crime statistics ;
- awareness of the synergy relationship between criminology , criminal policy and criminal law ;
-the capacity to understand and evaluate the aims of criminal policy underlying the choices made by the legislator through the criminal norms .
