Assigned to the Degree Course

Conservation and Restauration of Cultural Heritage (LMR/02)
Curriculum: PERCORSO COMUNE
Date Time Classroom / Location

Learning Objectives

Goals: basis of mineralogy and petrography for a correct identification of minerals and rocks; particular attention will be addressed to the most used ornamental stones. The lectures will be integrated with exercises with macroscopic stone samples.

Program

Minerals, crystals and rocks. Morphology and crystal symmetry. Polymorphism and isomorphism. Physical features of minerals. Systematic mineralogy. The classification of silicates. Concepts of minerogenesis. Definition of rock: structural and textural characteristics. Magmatic rocks: intrusive and effusive processes. Classification methods and nomenclature of magmatic rocks. Sedimentary rocks: formation processes, structures and textures.Classification of silicoclastic, carbonatic and evaporitic rocks. Metamorphic processes: contact and regional. Structure, textures and nomenclature of the main metamorphic rocks. Ornamental stones largely used in the historical times.Weathering and deterioration of stones. Mechanical, chemical and biodeterioration processes. Practical exercises with stone samples regarding the identification of the main macroscopic features of magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student have to demonstrate:

-knowledge of the petrogenetic processes and the classification systems; macroscopic characterization and mineralogical composition of rocks; identification of the main lithotypes of historic and archaeological interest;

- knowledge and understanding of the relationships between macroscopic textures and mineralogical composition with the petrogenetic processes;

- ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity for the identification of the origin of the lithotypes for a correct action of restoration;

-the learning skills allowing to continue to study in an independent way.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures and exercises with macroscopic stone samples.

Course books

- Autori Vari (2004) - Pietre e Marmi antichi. Natura, caratterizzazione, origine, storia d'uso, diffusione e collezionismo. A cura di Lorenzo Lazzarini. CEDAM-Padova.
Testo non in commercio ma diponibile in biblioteca:
- B.D'Argenio, F.Innocenti, F.P.Sassi (1994) - Introduzione allo studio delle rocce. UTET.
Possibility of sending pfd material.

Assessment

Oral examination.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
