Learning Objectives

The course aims to give historic and critical advanced notions on the ancient Italian Literature, on its periodization, and on the essentials intellectual instruments for its knowledge. In addition, the purpose of the course is that of giving adequate methodologies concerning relations between History of Vernacular Literature and related disciplines such as Linguistics and Italian Philology. In particular, it intends to offer a general survey on Dante's Studies from the beginning of the twentieth century until the last decades.

Program

The course is divided into three parts: the first one will be devoted to the dissemination of Dante's Comedy and to some of the most relevant philological issues. The second part will be focused on literary topics relating to the genre of the text and its structure. Thirdly, Dante's readings from Inferno, Purgatorio, as well  as Petrarch's Familiar Epistle XXI 15 and some passages from minor works by Boccaccio.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Students are expected to show an adequate mastery of the basic information on the discipline, especially concerning its foundamental elements (textual analysis, knowledge of the contests, periodization, notion on Philology), and the relationship with other disciplines such as History and History of vernacular language. Students are expected to show a full comprehension of the main concepts of the course, and a skill in facing their complexity. In addition they are expected to be able to analyze a text of literature (both in latin and vernacular prose and poetry), with a special attention to their relationship with history of language. Students are expected to show a complete mastery of Italian language, and especially to be able to apply to the specific field of the critical language, with an adequate knowledge of the sectoral languages.

Attendance

The students who intend to sit the exam as "frequentanti" are required to attend regularly. In particular, the exam will require the knowledge of everything is tought during the lectures.

A booklet of various materials, including criticl contributions, will be at the student disposal at the beginning of the course. As a program, the students are expected to prepare the following texts:  Dante's Inferno (the whole work),  Stefano Carrai-Giorgio Inglese, La letteratura italiana del Medioevo. Nuova edizione. Assessment

Oral exam. The interview will be based on the basic knowledge of the discipline, and on the mastery of analyzing the texts, and also on an adquate mastery in the exposition.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
