Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide to the students the concepts of some Geophysical Methods of seismic prospecting and the fundamentals of Seismology for the two Seismic Methods
Program
1. Elasticity - Displacement, rotation, stress and strain. Equilibrium equation. Elastic deformation energy. The Hooke's generalized law. Equilibrium equation for an elastic, homogeneous and isotropic medium. Equation of motion in an elastic medium and its solutions.
2. Volume waves - Wave fronts and rays. Reflection and refraction of plane waves. Multiple reflection. The travel time graphs.
3. Geophysical methods of seismic prospecting - Seismic methods of reflection and refraction. Coefficient of reflection and refraction angle. Geophones: electromagnetic geophone with mobile coil and piezoelectric geophone.
4. Seismic method of reflection - Geophones and point of bursting. Seismograms. Static correction: reduction of seismograms to the reference plane. The case of inclined reflective horizon.
5. Seismic method of refraction - The case of three horizontal layers with constant vertical velocity. The case of a layer with lower velocity of the overlying layer. The case of inclined refractive horizon.
6. Seismometry - Seismic events: the main parameters. Intensity and magnitude. Seismic sensor. Data acquisition system. Using seismic data: calculation of the dissipated energy and propagation direction. Relation between magnitude and seismic energy. The determination of the focal mechanism.
Bridging Courses
"Geophysics" is strongly suggested.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Frontal lessons and practises.
- Course books
I. A.Norinelli, Geofisica Applicata, Casa Editrice Patron, Bologna.
II. E.Boschi, M.Dragoni, Sismologia, Casa Editrice UTET, Torino.
- Assessment
Oral examination.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
