Learning Objectives

The course is addressed to the assessment of the volcanic hazards and risk. It also deals with the understanding of the relationships between Volcanology and Geothermal Energy and the different use of this renewable.

Program

Volcanic activity and Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). Explosive and effusive eruptions and their products. Classification of the explosive eruptions. Volcanic edifices. Calderas. The Vesuvio case study. Monitoring of volcanoes. Volcanic Hazards. Volcanic Risk. Definition of the geothermal energy. Introductory concepts and History of the geothermics. Volcanology and geothermal energy. Classification of the geothermal resources. Structure of the geothermal areas: the heat source, the reservoir, the cap rocks. Geothermal exploration: geological, geochemical, hydrogeological and geophysical methods of investigations. Deep exploratory wells. Modeling of geothermal systems. Regional geothermics and history of the geothermal resources in Italy and Latin America. Different uses of the geothermal resource. Generation of electricity (open dry steam system and closed binary cycle ORC system). Direct use of the geothermal resource: hot water (district heating), Heating and cooling systems with Ground Coupled Heat Pumps (GCHP).

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Assessment

Oral examination.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
