Learning Objectives
The course will present and analyse the most significant aspects of French cultural history in the XX and XXI centuries through cinema – a privileged witness of cultural and social unrest. The course offers the student an understanding of the socio-historical context of France in this period, as well as the tools to master the language of cinema, the opportunity to develop a narrative and sociological critique of the films presented, and the acquisition of useful elements for cultural analysis.
Program
After a brief introduction to the birth and evolution of cinema, the following stages and problems in French culture will be presented on screen through a representative sample of cinematic works and excerpts: Surrealism, the Popular Front, Occupation, The Holocaust, the Algerian war, the 1960s, 1968, Immigration, and the Banlieue.
The films chosen belong to a variety of genres and offer occasion to reflect on the manners in which the French have interpreted their history on screen.
