The object of this course is to have the students look at the question of whether or not one can speak of a “European literature”, examining which have been the ideological, historical and cultural interferences that have promoted or undermined this concept.

Another aim is enable the students to produce a written paper in Italian on a topic of their choice that due to research method and retrieval of bibliographic resources, could be a useful precursor to the writing of a dissertation in a humanistic field.

Contents:

Basic structures of culture in the Middle Ages.

Classical, Christian and Eastern tradition.

Phenomenology of literature: epic poetry, lyric poetry, romance poetry.

Individualisation of a European literary body of rules.

Some of the lessons will be delivered in French or Spanish language, with the participation of specialized professors. 

Objectives (Dublin descriptors): Students must demonstrate a knowledge in historical and comparative perspectives of the cultural and literary structure of France, Spain and Italy in the passage from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, to the Modern Age.

Students must also demonstrate how to develop a thesis in Humanistic field.

Students are required to be able to apply their knowledge and understanding, and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments, within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.
