2. Population and sample.

3. Measuring scale variables.

4. Main indices of position (arithmetic mean, median and mode)

and dispersion (variation range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation,

quartiles, interquartile range).

5. bivariate statistics: regression and correlation.

6. Main distributions: Binomial, Poisson, Gaussian.

7. The sampling distributions: distribution of the sample mean and t-distribution.

8. Tests: the z test; the Student t test (for one and two samples).

9. Confidence intervals for means and proportions.

10. Classification of trials

11. The scientific method and unscientific methods

12. The research protocol

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

In relation to the methodology of research with elements of statistics,

students should show possession of:

- the mastery of basic skills;

- the understanding of the fundamental concepts of the discipline

- the ability to use knowledge and concepts to reason according to the logic of the discipline.

Course books

Rocchi MBL: Statistica e metodologia della ricerca per le discipline biomediche e psicocomportamentali, Edizioni Goliardiche, Trieste, 2007 (pag. 250)

Assessment

Written test; the oral exam is optional ( after passing the written test )

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
