Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students of Biological Sciences with the basic knowledge of clinical biochemistry through the study of the main biochemical parameters as indicators of pathological processes or organ function.

Program

Part 1°.  General aspects of the clinical chemistry laboratory
-  Role and importance of clinical biochemistry in the diagnosis.
-  Organization of chemical-clinical laboratory. 
-  Fluids and biological samples: blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, amniotic fluid,    seminal fluid, synovial, pleural and  pericardial  fluids.
-  The  collecting  of the various types of biological samples.
-  Processing and storage of various biological samples.
-  Nomenclature and reporting.
Part 2°.
- Regulation of acid-base  equilibrium and electrolyte balance.
-Renal function and urinalysis
- Alterations in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Hyper-and hypoglycemia.DiabetesClinical biochemistry of pancreas.
- Alterations in lipid metabolisrm.  
- The markers of cardiac damage
- Clinical biochemistry of liver.   
- Tumor markers.
- Male and female fertility.

Knowledge and understanding
Know and understand the basic concepts of clinical biochemistry. 
Identify ways that regulate the body maintain balance.
Describe the main biochemical markers used in clinical diagnostics. 
Acquire the specific language. 
Applying knowledge and understanding
Being able to apply the acquired knowledge for the proper execution and interpretation of the main laboratory tests.  
Making judgements
Be able to critically evaluate the analytical methods and the results of the laboratory tests and, based on them, to make assumptions
Communication skills 
Ability to explain the results of the study with appropriate terminology and in a logical, clear and correct.
Learning skills
Be able to collect and process the information given by the teacher with those of texts and on line documents.
Being able to link and integrate the knowledge learned with those provided in previous courses.
