Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide:

  • knowledge on the major determinants which can exert a significant effect on human health  and diseases also with the aid of approaches to molecular epidemiology;
  • the acquisition of knowledge of the effective means for the prevention of major infectious and non-infectious disease and the promotion of health of the individual and the community;
  • knowledge of effective elements in promoting health education. Moreover students should be able to apply the basic concepts of hygiene in the profession of biologist for the prevention of diseases, improving health and safety in the workplace.
  • Particular reference will be made to work environments regarding chemical, biological, and physical hazard and procedures for quality management in research laboratories and chemical analysis, microbiological, clinical and environmental. It will also be paid attention to legislative updates as regards checks for environmental matrices such as air water and soil.

  • Hygiene goal. Diseases and health. Demography and health. Health indicators.
  • Notion of medical statistics.
  • The investigation and epidemiological methodology for the assessment of health status and disease.
  • Analytical and experimental epidemiology. Molecular epidemiology. Predictive medicine.
  • Prevention methodology. The levels of prevention. Pharmacological prevention. Immune prophylaxis. Screening.
  • Epidemiology and prevention of trasmissible and parasitic diseases. Diagnostic assessment.
  • Notification, quarantine measures, disinfection, asepsis and sterilization. Batteriofagia and decontamination. Disinfestation.
  • Nosocomial infections. Transmitted infections: by air; fecal-oral route; sexual; skin or mucosa. Zoonoses, parasites and fungal infections. Alimentary risk, biological and chemical hazards. Infections, toxinfection and alimentary intoxications.
  • Epidemiology and prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. The multifactorial model. The risk factors. Biological markers.
  • Environmental hygiene. The main environmental pollutants and their effects on human health. Outdoor and indoor air pollution. Water pollution and health effects. Collection and treatment of municipal wastewater. Drinking water: chemical and microbiological checks and treatment system. The sanitary waste produced in the laboratory: classification and management. Environmental legislation.
  • Hygiene and safety in the workplace. The main regulations of interests for the protection of health and safety in the workplace. Biohazard, chemical and physical risk and personal protective equipment.
  • The health care organization in Italy and in the world.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

  • D1-KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The student must demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge concerning: the general principles of hygiene; the positive and negative determinants of health; methods of prevention; environmental hygiene and reflections on health; safety at work; the essential levels of care in the SSN.
  • D2-APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The student will demonstrate the ability to recognize the methodologies for the analysis and control of the hygienic quality of the environmental built and not, and food and in particular the methodologies for the quality control, hygiene and safety in research, chemical, microbiological and clinical laboratories, and environmental analysis.
  • D3-JUDGEMENT The student will have acquired knowledge to enable him to assess and interpret data from epidemiological studies, the experimental values of  laboratory, to evaluate the safety in the workplace proposing preventive and corrective actions.
  • D4-COMMUNICATION SKILLS The student must demonstrate that they have the ability to transfer in the workplace and not the knowledge gained through relevant terminology to the health in relation to the issues of prevention and health promotion.
  • D5-LEARNING SKILLS The student will be able to examine and understand the reference material useful for the profession and for research.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

The educational material will be distributed through the Moodle platform (Blended Learning Uniurb) in the manner decided by the teacher. Be given directions on how reperirele bibliographic sources to deepen the individual topics and italian legislative reference.

Assessment

Oral examination.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Notes

Further information on textbooks  will be given during the course.

The student can request to sit the final exam in English with an alternative bibliography. (Course with optional materials in a foreign language).
