Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with  knowledge on the major determinants which can exert a significant effect on human health and diseases with particular reference to infectious and multifactorial diseases also with the aid of approaches to molecular epidemiology.

The acquisition of knowledge of the effective means for the prevention and control of major infectious and non-infectious disease and the promotion of health of the individual and the community. Particular emphasis will be given to different types of vaccines (from whole infectious agents, from components of micro-organisms, conjugate, combined), in particular to applications of biotechnology techniques in the fields of vaccines production and the use of recombinant DNA technology and in the evaluation of vaccine efficiency, safety and policy.

Program

Definition of health, indicators of health and disease, risk factors.

Epidemiological methodology: observational and experimental studies. Molecular epidemiology. Biological markers.

Notion of medical statistics.
Prevention methodology. The levels of prevention.

Detecting of pathogens: microbiological analysis and immunological techniques and modern methods based on molecular biology techniques.

Notions on Immunology. The immune response. The antibody response. Active Immunity. Passive Immunity. Vaccine. Vaccine biotechnology: applications of biotechnology techniques in the fields of vaccines production and the use of recombinant DNA technology and the evaluation of vaccine efficiency, safety and policy. Serological texts.

Papillomaviridae, Hepadnaviridae,  Herpersviridae,  Coronaviridae. Oncogenic viruses.

Antibacterial chemotherapy. Antibiotic assay.

Pharmaco-resistant bacteria.

Epidemiology and prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. The multifactorial model. The risk factors. Screening.

Laborary experieces will complete the program with basic and advanced information.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Students will need to show that they have acquired a good basic knowledge of applicability of general and applied hygiene science, as well as of the principal methods used in the fields of vaccines production and in the evaluation of vaccine efficiency, safety and policy.

Assessment

Oral examination
