Learning Objectives

The course aims to give students the fundamental theoretical concepts of regional economics, regional growth and of industry localization. Tackles later theories of development on a local scale, with particular attention to the phenomenon of industrial districts. Finally, critical elements of local development and future challenges are analyzed.

Program

Part One: Theory of Localization.
 

1.1. Agglomeration economies, localization and transport costs.
1.2. Market size, economies of scale and transport costs.
1.3. The space demand, market balance and the company's localization.
1.4. The interdependence in the location choices: the Hotelling model.
1.5. Other models of localization: von Thünen, Cristaller and Lösch.
1.6. Hierarchy and Localization.


Part Two: Theories of regional growth.
 

2.1 The different growth / regional development interpretations.
2.2 Stages of development and inequality.
2.3 Industrial and Regional Growth Structure.
2.4 The peripheral centrality approach.


3. Demand and regional growth.
 

3.1 The exporting region: the export base model.
3.2 The input-output analysis.
3.3 The importing region: the Harrod-Domar model.


Third part: the local development theories
3.1 Competitiveness and exogenous development.
3.2 The poles of development.
3.3 Spatial diffusion of innovation.
3.4 Competitiveness and endogenous development.
3.5 The agglomeration economies.
3.6 The industrial district.


Part Four: Theories of regional growth

4.1 Increasing returns and competitiveness.
4.2 The accumulative circular development.
4.3 The new economic geography.
4.4 Endogenous Growth: stock of knowledge

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures; for attending students there is the possibility to perform thematic analysis with short dissertations useful for the examination assessment. During the course seminars will be organized.

Assessment

Written exam

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
