Learning Objectives

The course is addressed to students who already known well the Latin language. We will carefully analyse Plautus' Truculentus from a lexical and syntactic point of view to anderline the author's particular stylistic features. Further attention will be given to its handwritten tradition and the connected paleographic problems

Program

Students will have to show their ability in reading, translating and commenting Plautus' Truculentus from a linguistic and stylistic point of view, in addition to understanding the critical apparatus. The chosen study edition (W.M. Lindsay, Oxonii 1910) will be available in photocopy.A morphological-syntactic comprehension of the language is a pre-requisite; any eventual gaps will have to be filled during the course. 

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The students are expected to have reached a certain familiarity with Plautus' language and - thanks to a brief history of old writing and the study of critical apparatus - a fair knowledge of the text different versions with all the difficulties that the absence of the original manuscript implies.   

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

The students will be given a bibliography and photocopies of the texts difficult to find. Some hours will be dedicated to a short excursus on history of writings.All the didactic matertial and the theacher's communication, together with other supporting activities, are accessible on the university Moodle platform (blended.uniurb.it).

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

The course consists in six weekly one-hour-lectures during which the students will be directly involved, not only to encourage their participation, but also to stimulate their analytical approach.

Attendance

The attendance is not compulsory, but certainly recommended to reach the arranged targets.

Course books

It is suggested that the student read the Truculentus in an edition provided with a facing-page translation (see Mondadori), even though class work and final assessment will be lead on Lindsay's critical edition.For a better knowledge of morphological-syntactic issues and about the language evolution (historical grammar) it is suggested to consult Propedeutica al latino universitario (A. Traina-G. Bernardi Perini, sixth edition, reviewed and  updated by C. Marangoni, Patron,  Bologna); additional bibliographic material - in particular about Plautus - will be provided during the course.  

Assessment

In the oral final assessment the students will be asked to read, translate and analyse from a grammatical-syntactic point of wiew one or two extracts taken by Truculentus, paying attention to its critical apparatus and according to the methods followed concorded with the students. 

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Teaching

At least three months before their chosen exam session the students will have to get in touch with the teacher and if possible to arrange a meeting during which to discuss preparation, assessment conditions and extra bibliographic material.
