Learning Objectives

The course provides a general view on Greek and overall  Roman fundamental sculptures, which from 16th to 20th century became a ideal model of the classical antiquity, and radically influenced the western culture, not only its artistic productions.

Program

In accord to the sequence diachronically defined by the time rediscovering of such nobilia opera, there masterpieces will be illustrated in the perspective of the ancient historical, geographical and cultural context that produced and used each of them. They’ll be also considered the collecting and antiquarian practices that contributed to construct their fame in modern and contemporaneous age; the dynamics that influenced the transmission and multiplication of such iconographical types and/or subjects. Particular attention will be reserved to the historical plaster casts, because of their relevant role in the transmission and knowledge of the models over the time.
