Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide the conceptual and methodological bases useful to analyze welfare systems in advanced economies as well as their transformations since the postwar era outlining the future prospects. In particular, it will provide the conceptual and methodological bases to analyze the processes of convergence / divergence and the different welfare state models in Europe with particular attention to the regional dimension and how this has changed since World War II to today. The analysis will consider various policies (retirement, health, social assistential, labor, etc.).
Program
The course is divided into two parts. The first provides an analysis of the different definitions of the welfare state and welfare systems, and the different methodologies used to investigate the characteristics. The second addresses the issue from a historical viewpoint, reconstructing the main steps of the process of institutionalization of social policies. The second will be highlighted the debate on convergence and divergence in welfare systems, trying to bring out the processes of re-territorialization of social policies in Europe. In particular we will analyze the transformation of the territorial dimension of social needs considering some policies specifically (eg labor, social assistential, retirement, etc ....) and the question of social spending and its territorial implications.

Students will gain the analytical tools to understand and analyze in comparative terms welfare systems of major European countries, verifying the critical issues and the different options available to policy makers.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
During the course will take place some practical exercises in relation to obtaining information / data relevant to the analysis of social policies and we will view documentaries and films for educational purposes.
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Introductory frontal lessons, group work (preparation of a paper), presentation of papers and discussion. The papers are optional, but contribute to the final evaluation.
- Attendance
To achieve a good preparation of the review program including: a) an oral presentation plus an oral examination; or b) an oral presentation plus the preparation of a written essay. More information will be given during the course.
- Course books
The texts for attending students will be agreed during the course according to the topic chosen by the students for presentations / papers.
- Assessment
Oral presentation during the course of a a scientific contribution on the issues addressed (plus oral exam) or written and oral presentation of a paper.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
