Learning Objectives
An introduction to Legal English, B1 level (European Framework)
Program
The course is designed to gain an insight into legal English through readins, listening and speaking activities as well as writing legal documents.
The following topics will be presented in class:
- A career in Law
- Contract Law
- Tort Law
- Criminal Law
- Company Law
- Commercial Law
- Real Property Law
- Differences between Legal Systems (the materials will be made available on blended.uniurb.it)
In due course more materials will be made available for in-depth analysis.
Bridging Courses
All students must pass Lingua Inglese Idoneità for Law Students that is English Language Pass/Fail held at the CLA (Centro Linguistic d'Ateneo) before they can access the English Legal Language Exam.

Knowledge and uderstanding
At the end of the course the students must demonstrate to have acquired the knowledge of the Legal English vocabulary presented in class and its use at the B1 level. This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.
The students must be able to apply the knowledge acquired and to face different dynamics making their own judgements.
Applying knowledge and understanding
The students must demonstrate to be able to apply their knowledge both for the written and spoken English a the B1 level demonstrating to be able to communicate effectivey thaks to the vocabulary and structures learnt during the course and to be able to understand a text in legal English. This will be carried out through lectures, group work, written assignments, discussions and listening activities.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

- Assessment
All students must pass Lingua Inglese Idoneità for Law Students that is English Language Pass/Fail held at the CLA (Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo) before they can access the English Legal Language Exam.
The students must pass both a written(valid one academic year) and an oral exam.
In the written exam the students will have some open answers, true/false and multiple choise questions, a listening test and a short written assignemnt (such as an email).
In the Oral exam the students will answer some questions related to the topics presented in class.
The expected learning results will be evaluated by means of a written and an oral exam. The evaluation criteria and the scale of marks are as follows:
less than 18/30: competence level insufficient. The student doesn’t reach the learning results described in “knowledge and understanding”.
18-20: competence level sufficient. In particular, the student attains the learning results described in “knowledge and understanding”.
21-23: competence level satisfactory. In particular, the student attains the learning results described in “knowledge and understanding” and in “applied knowledge and understanding”.
24-26: competence level good. In particular, the student attains the learning results described in “knowledge and understanding”, “applied knowledge and understanding” and “making judgments”.
27-29: competence level very good. In particular, the student attains the learning results described in “knowledge and understanding”, “applied knowledge and understanding”, “making judgments” and “communication skills”.
30-30 with honours: competence level excellent. The student fully attains the learning results described in “knowledge and understanding”, “applied knowledge and understanding”, “making judgments” and “learning skills”.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
