Learning Objectives
The module aims to provide students with the fundamentals methods, practical and theoretical, used to discriminate between different soils. Will also be considered the hydraulic and mechanical properties of soils and the experimental methods used to determine numerical values representative of these properties.
Program
Principal types of soils. Physical Properties of Soils. Size and shape of soil particles. Particle-size analysis (sieve shaker and density method). Index properties. Properties of very fine soil fractions (Clays). Water in soils. Soil moisture. Capillary phenomena. Piping. Drainage. Types of Cohesion. Consistency limits. Clay Activity. Soil classification methods. Mechanical properties of soils. Stress and strain in soils. Effective and neutral stresses and critical hydraulic. Shearing resistance of cohesionless soils. Shearing resistance of cohesive soils. The Mohr circle. Direct shear test. Triaxial compression tests. Unconfined compressive strength. Laboratory vane test. Compressibility of soils. Consolidation test with oedometer. Consolidation soils theory. Compaction. Proctor tests. Sates of plastic equilibrium and earth pressure, Rankine theory. Coefficient of active and passive earth pressure. Active earth pressure against retaining walls. Coulomb and Rankine methods. Foundations. Types. Stability of base embankments. Soil breaking. Bearing capacity of Footings and Piers Foundations. Allowable pressure on the subsoil. Settlements. Contact pressure and subgrade reaction. Stability of slopes. Stability analysis. Methods of controlling and monitoring.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Assessment
Verbal examination.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
