Learning Objectives
Students are expected to have a background on the principles of physical
stratigraphy, lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy. The course focusses
on the integration of classic stratigraphic tools and more advanced
methods including cyclostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and
chemostratigraphy and their use for the purpose of straigraphic correlation.
Program
- Stratigraphy : definition and procedures
- Classical stratigtraphic units; introduction to stratigraphic principles. Litostratigraphic units, magnetostratigraphic units, biostratigraphic units, chronostratigraphic and geochronoloical units.
- The concept of Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP)
- Principles of stratigraphic correlation
- Chemostratigraphy
Introduction and definitions
Isotopic stratigraphy
Oxygen isotopes
Carbon isotopes
Strontium isotopes
Examples and case studies
- Orbital cyclostratigraphy
Response of the climate system to orbital forcing
Orbital forcing and sedimentary environments
Identification of cyclical features
Introdution to spectral analysis of time series
Examples and case studies
- Methods of absolute dating
- The geological time scale
