Learning Objectives

Educational goals
The virus agents are characterized by an extreme structural simplicity, but complex from the biological functional point of view. The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge on the biological aspects, epidemiology and pathogenesis of animal viruses.

Program

Introduction, structure and classification of animal viruses. Replication of the virus and effect on the host cell. Overview of genetics of viruses. Cultivation. Viral pathogenesis. Principles of diagnosis. Bacteriophages. Overview of viral therapy. Characteristics of some families of viruses: Herpersviridae, Adenoviridae, Papillomaviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Reoviridae, Fliaviviridae, Caliciviridae, Togaviridae, Picornaviridae, Retroviridae, Hepadnaviridae, Dedltavirus. Outline of viroids. Prions.

D1 Knowledge and understanding abilities

The student must show to have acquired the main tools needed to understand the etiopathogenetic mechanisms of viruses and their role in human pathology, using the scientific language.

D2 Applying knowledge and understanding

The student must show the ability to recognize and apply the cognitive tools and the methodological accuracy of Virology in order to practice several activity indirectly linked to health safety.

D3 Independent judgment

The student must show the ability to update their knowledge by consulting scientific publications in Virology sector.

D4 Communication skills

The student must show the ability to utilize in the professional field the basics gained during the course; the ability to independently evaluate the results of investigations aimed to clarify the involvement of microorganisms in food staff.
