Learning Objectives

The course will focus on a theoretical investigation of the main ethical and political implications of all the arguments that will be addressed. The objective is to acquire technical language and enhancing reading, comprehension and commentating abilities of philosophical material. The student will acquire the knowledge useful to deal with fundamental conceptual conundrums.

Program

During the commemoration of  Thomas Hobbes 430th birth anniversary (Westport, 1588 – Hardwick 1679), the course will concentrate on the first and second part of the Leviathan. In this book, the English philosopher provides the reader, aided by the geometrical method, with an extraordinary example of science theory and political doctrine. The book will be examined and commentated, with an emphasis on the problems of knowledge and on the mechanisms of language production. Further attention will be paid to the role of passions within the materialistic anthropology described by Hobbes. Finally, the course will focus on an analysis of the state of nature and to the recognition of the fundamental characters of civil law, that, for Hobbes, originates in the “mortal god”, i.e. the absolute sovereignty.
